Why Change Your Garage Door Opener

01/24/2015 Back To Blog

The garage door opener is a convenient device that enhances your garage, and your home as a whole. Once found only in the homes of the well to do, technological innovations have allowed this amazing invention into the lives of all home owners. No longer does one need to brave the snow, the wind and the rain to open the garage door. The system is comprised of several parts, including a remote opener, a reversal mechanism and a limit switch. Yet, as with all household devices, there will come a time when it must be replaced. In this article we'll look at some common reasons to replace your garage door opener. It is important to stress not to attempt any repairs and installation yourself—instead call an experienced garage door contractor, such as garage door repair Kyle.Garage Door Openers 24/7 Services

It stops working

This is the most common reason for replacing the opener. As we mentioned earlier, the system is comprised of several key components, and the reason for the unit to stop working can be caused by any number of them. Are you trying to open your door, and nothing happens? Perhaps your remote opener has gone bad. Try changing the batteries in the opener. If that doesn't work, it may be time to change your garage door opener. The problem could also be in the limit switch. Keep in mind your garage door is extremely heavy, easily weighing over 300 pounds. This is why we stress that you do not attempt repairs yourself.

The safety reversal mechanism no longer works

Imagine your door closing, and as it does, your child or pet runs under it. It's not a pretty picture to envision, so the industry in 1982 adopted reversal mechanisms as the standard. These devices use a photo-electric sensor to detect when a person or object gets in the way of the door. These sensors are usually positioned a few feet above the ground. Once the object is sensed, the door stops and reverses. It is recommended you test the reversal mechanism once a month. To do this, simply place a two by four board underneath the door as it closes. If the door reverses, no problem. If not, see if any grime or dirt is on the sensor, as this can impair its ability to function. If there is no dirt, and the reversal mechanism still doesn't work, then there is a serious problem that must be addressed.

These are just a few of the reasons your garage door opener might need to be replaced. The opener units are complex in nature, consisting of multiple parts, including ones not detailed in this article, and any one of them could be the culprit. Once again, we must stress that due to the nature of the opener, not to attempt any repairs yourself.
